‘Gutted’ Mkhitaryan vows to score in second leg after marginal offside call

Inter's Henrikh Mkhitaryan has brought a marginal offside call while putting a simple task for next week's second stage against Barcelona.

Mkhitaryan thought he had brought Inter in a 4-3 lead during the exciting first stage on Wednesday of the semi-final draw of the Champions League.

Marcus Thuram scored the fastest goal in the semi-final history of Champions League after just 30 seconds, before Denzel Dumfries reached the score at 2-0.

Lamine Yamal, however, dragged Barca in again with a moment of magic on his 100th Blaugrana -with Ferran Torres and then recovered parity.

The second of the Dumfries match brought Inter again, although Barca was leveled only 114 seconds later by Yann Sommer's own goal.

Mkhitaryan sent home from a right-wing cross, but the flag of the assistant stood for offside, with the semi-automated system that confirmed a small part of the foot of the Armenian, was outside the last man.

“I feel very stripped,” Mkhitaryan told TNT Sports when he was asked about the Niet -Toegestane goal.

“Unfortunately it was perhaps two or three centimeters, but you can't do anything.

“Maybe I hurried to go offside, I wanted to score this goal too much. This is football – I have to score in the second stage, that's it.”

This was only the third time that Inter has not succeeded in winning a Champions League match, after he had led 2+ goals, after a 3-2 loss for Borussia Dortmund in November 2019 and a 3-3 draw with Benfica in April 2023.

“It was a crazy game, a great game to watch, but not to play – it was very difficult,” said Mkhitaryan.

“We could have done it even better. It is football, everything can happen. We were going to lead 20 minutes, but it is not as if we thought the game had already been won. It is just that Barca put a lot of pressure on us; they were very good with the ball.

“We are convinced that we can do better. It is not easy to play against Barca, they are a very young, talented team. The only thing the coach said is to keep our heads, keep doing what we do.”

Inter, those three points behind Napoli in the Serie A-title race, was given a blow during the break when Lautaro Martinez was forced to be injured, and Mkhitaryan implied that the Argentinian will be missing for the second stage.

“We lost our captain, our leader, Lautaro, but we have to do our best to replace him and without playing him,” he said.

Dumfries has since been appointed player of the game after he became the first Dutchman since Wesley Sneijder to score and help in a semi -final of the Champions League.

“That is a nice statistics. I didn't know that,” Dumfries told TNT Sports when Opta -Feit was brought to him.

“I was very proud of the show today.

“A crazy game in the end, both teams fought for the victory, now we are looking forward to the next game.”
