Viktor Gyokeres scored a crucial goal to help Sporting Lisbon to end their campaign with another trophy – and he then spoke about the possibility of a transfer of £ 60 million to Arsenal
Viktor Gyokees offered a meaningful hint that he is about to leave Sporting Lisbon after he helped his side complete a domestic double. Gyokees is the most sought after striker in Europe this summer and is strongly connected to a move to Arsenal.
He concluded his 2024/25 campaign in style, because Sporting added the Portuguese cup to the league title with a nervy victory over Rivals Benfica. Gyokeres scored a crucial equalizer of the penalty spot in the 11th minute of added time to force the game in extra time after Benfica took the lead by Orkun Kokcu.
Sporting then penetrated in extra time, with goals from Conrad Harder and Francisco Trincao who secured the trophy with a 3-1 win. His goal meant that Gyokeres ended the season with two trophies to deal with his 53 goals and 13 assists in 51 games.
But immediately after the last whistle and the trophy lift the Swedish striker he was asked about. Speaking with reporters, he tried to keep his cards close to his chest when he interviewed in a hanging transfer, but his words spoke volumes.
“Let's take a look,” he said. “It's hard for me to say, because yes, it's football and you never know what will happen in the summer. So for me to say something different than that is impossible.”
Specifically asked about Arsenal, he added: “I don't know, I concentrate on this alone. I tried to concentrate on the latest games because it is so important and I don't want to think about something else. So yes, if there is something true, let's look in the summer.”
Mirror Football understands that Arsenal believes that Gyokeres will be theirs if they increase the asking price of sporting of £ 60 million. The Gunners will have to pay the 26-year-old more than £ 200,000 a week to secure his services, but are ready to do this to secure the type of goal scorer of Top class they have missed.
Sporting and Gyokees have waited until the end of the season before they deal with the future of the Swedish international. They are now expected to open conversations with interested parties, with Arsenal at the front of the queue.
Did you say! Could the signing of Viktor Gyokeres Arsenal help to win the Premier League title next season? Respond below.
Arsenal finished second for the third consecutive Premier League season and knows that they missed a productive goal scorer, with the injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz who cost them a lot. New sports director Andrea Berta is the man who is responsible for finding the right man and it is assumed that Gyokees is their first choice for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko.
Mikel Arteta has made it clear that Arsenal needs a striker to go to the next level. “If you want to win big trophies, you have to be the best in the market, don't you?” Said Arteta before the trip to Southampton on the last day of the season. “What is clear with the amount of injuries we had in the front line is that we need a target threat and that we need firepower.
“Understanding that the context can change tomorrow, we can not only rely on the figures we had before. We have to do goals, add creativity and we have to add figures, and that will be in different positions.”
