Harry Redknapp rules out management return and advises Lampard at Coventry City

Harry Redknapp has ruled out a return to football after the 77-year-old announced his retirement in 2017.

In his illustrious 34-year coaching career, the Englishman managed nine teams, including Tottenham, West Ham and Southampton.

Six years after leaving Birmingham City, his last club, Redknapp revealed he was interested in taking over at Leeds following the sacking of Jesse March.

However, he made it clear he has no interest in joining Frank Lampard's coaching staff at Coventry City as he offered the former Chelsea boss advice on his new managerial role.

“If I could give Frank Lampard one piece of advice on his return to management at Coventry it would be to get a wise, old head on his staff,” Redknapp told The Sun.

'Not me, I've had it, but someone who has a bit more experience than him, who he can talk to.

'When I went to Portsmouth as manager I brought in Jim Smith. I was an experienced manager myself at the time, but he was still great for me to have around.

'Frank has a difficult job at Coventry and it would be a big advantage to have an older man in the team to gauge. But fair play to Frank for getting back into the game. He has so much to offer.

“His football knowledge is enormous and his reputation as a player, and the way he conducted himself as a player, will hopefully rub off on the team.

Lampard, Redknapp's cousin, led his Coventry side to a 2-2 draw at home to Cardiff on Saturday.

A late penalty from Victor Torp rescued a point for the relegation battlers, who now lie three points clear of the drop zone in 16th place.

His last managerial spell before joining Coventry took place between April and May 2023, where he struggled for results in his 11 games as Chelsea caretaker boss.

The club legend managed just one win, two draws and eight defeats in this period before being replaced by Mauricio Pochettino.

Now Lampard is looking to get his coaching career back on track at Coventry, who narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion to Luton in the Championship play-offs two seasons ago.
