‘He’d get eaten alive’ – Adil Rami calls out Ronaldo following his Ligue 1 jibe

Cristiano Ronaldo's harsh words about the French top flight are not going down well with a former world champion who has spent a lot of time in Ligue 1.

Adil Rami has played for three different Ligue 1 clubs throughout his career, most recently with ESTAC Troyes in 2022-2023.

The Bastia-born defender said on his Twitch account that “Ligue 1 is one of the strongest in the world; This is not up for debate.”

He says he has a lot of respect for Ronaldo, but adds that he is misleading people by claiming that the Saudi Pro League is better than Ligue 1.

If Ronaldo had played in France for the past two years, Rami says he would have been 'eaten alive'.

This war of words started last week at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, when the Al Nassr star striker said there is only Paris Saint-Germain in France, and “the rest is done.”

In response, the man who was part of France's 2018 World Cup victory challenged the Portuguese striker to try playing against the likes of AS Monaco, Lille OSC, Olympique de Marseille and Stade Brestois.

During his playing career, Rami helped Lille win the league and the Coupe de France in 2010–11, and on that occasion he was named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season.

He also helped Marseille reach the Europa League final in 2017/18 and was named in the Selection of the Season at that tournament.

The man who started his football career for Fréjus in Championnat National 2 said France is the “biggest breeding ground of talent in the world” alongside Brazil.

Three of the four Ligue 1 clubs currently competing in the UEFA Champions League are in line to reach the knockout stages, with only PSG falling outside the top 24.
