Henderson snaps at Monaco transfer ‘lies’ amid Ajax exit talk

Jordan Henderson has hit the “lies” around his future at Ajax in the midst of rumors that connect him with a move to Ligue 1 Side Monaco in the January transfer window.

Former Liverpool captain Henderson made the switch to the Eredivisie just over a year ago after having spent only six months in Saudi Arabia with Al-Etifaq.

The 34-year-old has made 45 performances in all matches for Ajax since his switch and has the captain of Francesco Farioli during the 2024-25 campaign.

But last week reports emerged that Henderson was looking for a relocation of the club, where Monaco was strongly connected this month to securing his signature.

Henderson denied those rumors in a press conference after the match after leading Ajax to a 2-1 victory over fierce Rivals Feyenoord on Sunday in the Johan Cruijff Arena.

“Everyone knows the financial situation of the club. Money needs to be created and that can be done by having big earners leave,” Henderson said about the situation to ESPN.

“I am one of the great earners. It is often about my salary in the media. The situation was that we had to decide whether it was worth running or keeping my salary in this case.

“Those were difficult conversations. I said what I thought, but together we came to the conclusion that I should stay. I am happy with that. I will give everything for the club and the team.

“Of course I am happy to stay. My plan was to stay here at least until the end of the season and then evaluate again. Many things were taken out of the context in the press. That was disrespectful, they were lies.

“Unwelden were told about me as a person. I tried to concentrate, but it feels painful. People can criticize me because of my game, but when it gets personal.

“I am a person with family, parents, a woman and children. If they read things in the press that are not true, it goes too far. I don't know what their sources are, but it's not true.”

Henderson was the captain of Ajax for a large part of this season, although he was against Galatasaray against Galatasaray on Thursday before their Europa League collision, he handed the bracelet to teammate Remko Pasveer.

In a separate press conference after the game on Sunday, he got involved in a heated fight with a number of reporters who lasted almost 10 minutes.

“I think 99% of people, if they knew the internal information, would not have played the game [on Thursday]”He said.

“Yet people in this room have questioned my professionalism and me as a person – I think it's out of order.

“I have a family, wife, children, dad, dad, reading nonsense in the media of yours.”
