Jordan Henderson may have been overlooked by England for last summer's European championship, but he went to the extreme as a fan in the Berlin final.
“I watched television and it was difficult, but I just wanted the boys to do it well and win,” said the 34-year-old Ajax midfielder, now called back to the fold by Thomas Tuchel.
'I had a good feeling that we would win, so I had to be there to see it. When I found out that I could go, there were no flights from England or Amsterdam.
'So I looked at how far it was and I hired a van for the family and the children. And we drove over.
“It was seven hours or something. When we needed the toilet or something like that or in the garages, it was pretty funny to see the fans.
“But of course I would rather have been to the team.”
At that time it was difficult to have Henderson play again for England.
After a controversial move to Saudi Aarabia, the former captain of Liverpool settled in Ajax and the Dutch League leaders were established.
It caught the attention of Tuchel, who knew that the experience and leadership of Henderson would be vital and invited him to come back via a phone call.
His return saw him win his 82nd cap against Albania.
Asked if he thought his international career was over, he added: 'Not really, otherwise I would have retired.
“I always felt good, I always wanted to come back – and luckily I got the chance.”
