Mikel Merino devoted his late Arsenal – Double to his wife Lola – after he forgot to buy her a Valentine's Day.
The Spaniard, 28, rose from the bank to take both goals of the Gunners in their 2-0 win in Leicester.
After the game, Merino made a brutal admission while speaking with TNT Sports.
He said to reporter Becky Ives: “It is the first time in my career that I played as a striker. The manager said I had to use my strengths and I think I did that.”
On when he expects to play more top, he added: “I don't think so to be honest.
“But it's a good day to score because I forgot to give my wife a Valentine's Day as a gift, so I think she will appreciate this more than a rose or some chocolates.”
When he saw Merino's interview, a fan joked: “Brother, you're in the doghouse.”
While a second joke made: “How romantic.”
A third joke: “Merino is so locked up that he forgot to get his wife a Valentine's Day.”
Despite the double double of the improvised, Ethan Nwaneri received TNT Sports' Player of the Match Award.
In the 17-year-old Merino added: “He is a great player.
“Every time I do an interview, you ask me for him!
“That is of course because he is such a talent.
“He has such a beautiful left foot and he put the ball straight on my head so that I could only score.”
The victory of Arsenal saw them reduce their shortage to Liverpool at the top of the table to four points.
