Gary Neville was now far from convinced and predicted that they would finish fifth – behind Manchester United – in the table. “Liverpool, my opinion would be the impact of [losing] Klopp will take his toll, “he said.

“Proof of history, this season there will be pain at a certain moment and it can cost them.

“I really wonder if that midfield of Liverpool can get up during the season. I think Manchester United has had more depth in midfield.”

So how did Liverpool go from sturdy outsiders to both hands on the trophy? This is the story of their season.
