Howe wants Newcastle’s full focus on Champions League push

Eddie Howe wants Newcastle United to leave their EFL Cup triumph behind while they strive for the qualification of Champions League.

Newcastle ended their 70-year-old waiting for a large trophy by beating Liverpool 2-1 in Wembley on March 16.

The Newcastle team celebrated the city with an open top bus parade last weekend, but must now go back to the Premier League.

Brentford visits St James' Park on Wednesday and with Newcastle only two points in fourth place Chelsea, Howe does not want a distraction in the run-in.

“We have to do what has been brought against Liverpool in mind and concentrate on the future,” said Howe.

“We still have 10 games left, 10 great opportunities to turn our season into a real memorable.

“We were excellent against Liverpool, and that level is that we are now being measured against.”

Newcastle has lost three of their last five league matches, and Howe wants to see a revival of consistency of his team.

He added: “Our home shape has been a bit scratching in recent weeks and we have had a few painful defeats.

“The challenge never stops, it gets bigger. We have to be ready for the test.

“There is no doubt about the power of Champions League football. It can change in terms of income for us. Qualification will be very, very difficult. It goes down who is the most consistent.

“After Liverpool there will be a trust elevator, but you must be careful that it will not be negative.

“We have to watch against that. This is an important moment in our season and it is how we respond. We have to galvanize ourselves and ride the enormous wave of positivity.”
