Humiliation! Grimsby 2-2 Man Utd (12-11 pens): Amorim’s side OUT of Carabao Cup

Manchester United suffered a humiliating caraba -cup output when they were beaten in a marathon penalty shootout by League Two Grimsby in Blundell Park.

It was that United had saved itself in the nick of time after he found two goals in a really terrible first half of a display, with returning goalkeeper Andre Onana in error for Grimsby's second.

Replacement Bryan Mbeumo pulled one back before Harry Maguire equalized in the last minute.

But Matheus Cunha did not succeed in gaining the victory in the last Spot-Kick of United of the Five Regulation, and Mbeumo's second penalty hit the bar to give Grimsby a 12-11 shootout success and to activate a pitching of the jubilant home fans.

United manager Ruben Amorim gave the impression of shrinking in the Dugout when the drama unfolded and one of only two realistic chances of silverware disappeared at the first available chance.

He underwent the 'looting in the morning' hymns of cheerful home fans in the position behind him in the first half while he saw how his side was in a still embarrassing position than he experienced last season, in which he described them as 'perhaps the worst' in the history of the club.

He was not helped by Onana's shocking error. The Cameroon International was omitted for the first two Premier League matches of the season and did not look completely comfortable, even before he came to pick up a cross in a busy crowd after 30 minutes.

Onana inexplicably dropped and former United Academy player Tyrell Warren turned the loose ball into an empty net.

The goal doubled the advantage that was given to Grimsby by Charles, who defeated Onana with a low shot after Kieran Green had taken possession of Amad Diallo and Manuel Ugarte, allowing Darragh Burns to deliver the distant post cross.

Amorim sent skipper Bruno Fernandes, new forward Mbeumo and defensive Kingpin Matthijs de Ligt during the break in an attempt to save the game.

Mbeumo pulled one back with a shot in the corner 15 minutes of time. Following more offensive substitutes who meant that Mason Mount and Mbeumo filled the wing-back roles towards the end, Maguire converted the last-minute equalizer.

While Cunha ran up to take United's fifth penalty, it seemed that they would escape. But Cunha failed – and his team too.
