Hummels apologises for costing Roma ‘dream’ of Europa League success

Mats Hummels held responsible for the cost of Roma their dream to win the Europa League after his resignation against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.

The former Borussia Dortmund Center-back received a straight red card for a professional error on Maroan Sannadi for only 11 minutes in San Mames.

Nico Williams then scored twice, with a different goal from Yuri Berchiche, because Leandro Paredes' stop time penalty of De Tijd turned out to be a consolation in a 3-1 defeat that Roma dumped a total of 4-3.

Hummels did not stop his emotions when he went to social media site X and apologized at Roma supporters for his resignation that the draw turned upside down.

“I'm sorry Roma, I want to apologize to our fans and my teammates,” the veteran defender posted.

“I abandoned everyone today with a mistake that was just stupid and terrible.

“In the past, these games were the games that my team could trust me, now it is me and I cost the whole club the dream to win the Europa League.

“Don't know what else to say, I'm just as disappointed in me as you all.”
