‘I could’ve joined Man Utd but chose Man City instead – this is why’

Nico O'Reilly has become the newest star of the Manchester City production line this season, with the 20-year impression when he was called by Pep Guardiola

Nico O'Reilly from Manchester City has revealed how he once agreed Manchester United and Liverpool to seal a future with Manchester City. O'Reilly, 20, has quickly become a radiant example of the talent that the Academy of the City continues to produce.

In the temptation of both giants of the city at just eight years old, it was City who managed to catch the eye of the young person. It turned out that his mother Holli let him choose his own path and the rest was history.

“It was limited to City and United,” he said, although Liverpool and Everton were both enthusiastic about him. He then explained why the Sky Blues had the lead over the Red Devils and others who wanted him at the time.

“Training here was so much better. At the other clubs it was just running around, playing games – it didn't really help you. It was a bit fun.”

His assets came to light for the first time when he made his competitive debut in the victory of the Club's Community Shield over United. Under the custody of coach Ben Wilkinson in the Academy, the attacking midfielder's big break in the Premier League came earlier this month during the 2-0 win against Leicester City.

After he initially baptized his toes in the water with performances against Ipswich Town and Newcastle United earlier in the season, this year's FA Cup campaign is that O'Reilly really started making waves, reports Manchester Even News.

O'Reilly scored his first goal for City in the third round 8-0 demolition of League Two Side Salford City. He then scored a brace in the 3-1 home win of the city on championship equipment Plygyle in the fifth round of the cup.

Another big moment for the young person came in the 2-1 of City about Bournemouth in the quarterfinals. Although he did not come to the score sheet, he walked off the field with both assists, flanked by Guardiola who marched him at the end to admire the fan.

O'Reilly also left his mark in the Champions League, debuted against Sparta Prague and with in every city team for the competition, except the last 16 match that beats Real Madrid.

Starting his journey as left back in the academy, O'Reilly is still coming to see his former teammates and keeps an eye on their competitions, recently attending a loss at Crystal Palace.

In an episode of the official Podcast of Man City in 2024 before his interview with the mail earlier this week, O'Reilly continued why City was the only choice for him.

“I started [playing] When I was three or four, “he said.” At the same time I was with a few basic teams, so my mother would take me from one game to another.

“The first team that explored me was actually united and then City came in for me as well as Liverpool and Everton. Before you sign a contract, you train with all the teams, so I did that a bit.

“I had a choice when I was under 8s and under the 9s from City and United. I chose the city because the training was a lot better.”

O'Reilly will now hope that he can have an impact on the team that he could enter into as City Face United on Sunday afternoon in Old Trafford.
