“I played for club I always wanted to play for” Cancelo reflects on Barca spell

At the age of 30, Joao Cancelo left Europe over the summer to join Saudi Pro League champions Al Hilal. The Portuguese defender signed from Manchester City, who no longer wanted him on their books – which was also the case last season when he was loaned to Barcelona.

Cancelo's time in Catalonia was indifferent: he had a strong start, but eventually his shortcomings were revealed in big games. Nevertheless, he revealed that his time at Barcelona was a dream come true (via Diario AS).

“Pepe told me that one day I should play for Real Madrid, but that I was a Barça fan. I am happy with my time at Barcelona because I can say that I played for the club I always wanted to play for. I am very proud…”

Barcelona were linked with re-signing Cancelo before his move to Al Hilal, although it was ultimately decided a deal was not worth it. He could emerge as an option in the future, even if that's unlikely.
