
Danny Guthrie has opened that he almost changed hearts over the joining to Newcastle United, until Liverpool -legend Steven Gerrard suddenly entered.
The former Magpies star revealed how his' stomach fell 'while he was on his way to a medical in St. James' Park before Gerrard told him that he would be' crazy 'to reject the move.
Guthrie was on his way to Newcastle in 2008 to complete a relocation from Liverpool, the club where he had been since he was 16 years old, when he started to get second thoughts. “I just felt my stomach falling,” the now 37-year-old told inner football.
“I had something like 'No, I can't do it'. I was in my dream club. I was in the best place in the world as far as I'm concerned the team and I was so proud to be a Liverpool player. It just struck me.
“I called my agent and I said,” Look, I don't want to do this. ” I am halfway and he said: 'No, just look in the training area and meet the manager.'
“The phone started ringing and it wasn't his number. It was Stevie G and he said,” What's going on? ” I went: “I drive to Newcastle.
“He said,” You're crazy. That is a good football club up there. Go there, settle yourself as your own husband, your own player. Go and be the man in someone else's team. Build that trust. Build yourself in the Premier League. You never know what the future has, but don't be someone who leaves in a big club. “
“That was it. As soon as he put down the phone, I went: “Yes, you're right” and I signed [for Newcastle]. “
Guthrie only made seven performances for Liverpool before moving to St. James' Park in 2008. He spent four seasons with the Magpies, which helped 104 performances to get promotion back to the Premier League in the 2009/2010 season.
After his time in the northeast, Guthrie Stints had Mitra Kukar, Walsall and Icelandic club fram in Reading, Fulham, Blackburn Rovers, Indonesian side.
