Over the years, Barcelona has let many top talents come through the famous La Masia Academy, with the most striking – of course – Lionel Messi. In the last decade, people like Ansu Fati, Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi made their name before they jump to the first team impressively, but perhaps none of them was just as high in youth categories as Ilaix Moriba.
Big things were expected from Moriba when he broke into the first team of Barcelona in September. However, he only managed to make 18 performances before he chose to leave the club for RB Leipzig, in a movement that was poorly received in the offices of Can Barca.
Since leaving Barcelona, the career of Moriba has stagnated. He struggled to make an impact in Germany, and that led to back-to-back loan spells in Valencia and Getafe, where he also had trouble leaving his mark. However, things look up in his latest spell in Spanish football with Celta Vigo.
Moriba came on loan at Celta last summer and he immediately lost it in Galicia. He has been one of the pillars in the Claudio Giraldez side, and his performances have become better and better as the season progresses. And the expectation is that the move will be made permanently at the end of the season.
Moriba is very happy with Celta, although he recently admitted that he regrets his decision to leave Barcelona in 2021, with quotes worn by sport.
“I was wrong to leave Barcelona. I was very young and I was busy. For a moment I thought it was all over. Fortunately I am now happy at Celta. “
Moriba is still only 22, so he has his best players for him. He has a lot of time to deliver the potential that he showed in La Masia, and if he does, he could eventually earn a move to Barcelona.
