Ian Machado Garry vs Carlos Prates UFC Kansas City result: ‘The Future’ survives late scare to set up potential title fight

Two topwelterweight contenders filled an epic night of fighting in UFC Kansas City.

Anthony Smith retired after his Co-Main event fight with Zhang Mingyang before Ian Machado Garry looked back from a first career loss against Shavkat Rakhmonov on UFC 310 in December.

The newest UFC Knockout artist, Carlos Prates, hoped to get six victories in a row since he joined MMA's Premier Promotion in November 2023.

The cigarette-loving Brazilian, however, was smoked by Garry in the first few rounds of the Main Event of UFC Kansas City, which ended with the Irishman who made a unanimous decision, with 48-47, 48-47 and 49-46 Scorecards.

It was a provisional first five minutes. Garry and Prates exchanged leg kicks for the most of the opening round, which ended with a slip, so that the Irish could land a considerable land and pound.

Garry was inviolable for almost 10 minutes. 'The Future' danced around the cage and jumped in with popshots, Takedown attempts and main kicks while apparently established a dominant lead on the score cards.

Prates was absolutely dominated in the third frame. Garry wiggled him on the feet before switching to struggling and continued to overwhelm his opponent on the floor.

Just like Garry seemed to dance over a routine victory, Prates shots began to land where his opponent was covered with blood and was looking for a moment to rest.

It was more of the same in the final round. Garry finally approached himself for the precious life, but he managed to survive the attack of Prates to bring UFC Kansas City's main event to the score cards that read to his advantage.
