Ian Wright has said that this summer it is not fair to have a potential summer movement for Alexander Isak too, because Newcastle has become a destination for players thanks to Eddie Howe
Ian Wright has said that it is 'disrespectful' to discuss Newcastle United that Alexander Isak is losing to Arsenal or another Premier League club in this summer's transfer star. But the Gunners legend admits that the tone could do badly with obtaining a return to the UEFA Champions League of next season, so that they can repel potentially interest during the low season.
Newcastle is not going to sell top scorer Isak or one of their other big names, but returning to the Champions League will keep the key. They have already guaranteed a Europa League spot thanks to the beating of Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
And Wright, who talks about the Kelly and Wrighty show, thinks that St James' Park is now a destination where players want to come because of the management of Eddie Howe, instead of a place that can be used as a springboard.
“I think it is vital that they get themselves in the Champions League,” Wright said. “Winning that trophy has given them the confidence to move forward.
“I now see Newcastle as a place where people want to go. There was a period in which people said:” What happens to Eddie, is he leaving? “
“I think it is rather disrespectful people who say about Isak, who is going to buy Isak. I think they can probably keep Isak and bring the quality as we have seen with (Sandro) Tonali.
“I love the way it has been switched with Eddie, because I am sure that when Newcastle was taken over, people thought that a lot of money would be spent. It did not work that way, and he has built a really good team. They win that trophy and play as they play, I really hope they really make it.”
Newcastle is fourth in the table with a game in hand over most of their rivals, but Manchester City, Chelsea and Aston Villa are all within two points.
That extra match will come against FA Cup semi-finalists Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening, in which assistant manager Jason Tindall takes the lead again, while Howe recovers from pneumonia in the hospital.
Tindall said he is willing to take the lead for as long as required, and emphasizes that the priority for Howe is returning to full health. He is also expected to be in charge for the weekend trip to Aston Villa.
