Ilia Topuria announces he will change ‘El Matador’ nickname ahead of next UFC challenge

Prior to his switch to the lightweight division, Ilia Topuria has announced that he will change his identity.

After he had eliminated Alexander Volkanovski on UFC 298 to become the UFC champion featherweight, Ilia Topuria became one of the biggest stars of the promotion.

The Starpower of the Spaniard was subsequently improved when he was the first hunter ever to eliminate Max Holloway when they collided with UFC 308.

After two monumental victories on 145 pounds, Topuria recently announced his shock title holiday and stated that he will move to the lightweight division to pursue the title.

Ilia Topuria announces an identity change at prior to the next UFC challenge

Topuria has constantly chased a fight against Islam Makhachev, the current king at 155 pounds, but Makhachev and his team are not willing to fight 'El Matador' without first defeating a competition.

The 28-year-old was told to fight a competition like Charles Oliveira, but Oliveira recently refused a potential fight against Topuria.

With the next step of the Spaniard relatively unknown at the moment, even though he is the next challenger of the title, Topuria has announced that he will enter the next phase of his career with 'a new identity'.

“El Matador has been my ally in every fight. But next time I will board the Octagon with a new identity. #Newa,” Topuria announced in a message on X.

Ilia Topuria can miss the title shot with Justin Gaethje favored

Although Topuria was apparently in a perfect position to receive a lightweight title shot, especially given the size of a potential fight between him and Makhachev, he could be missed.

On UFC 313 earlier this month, old lightweight competition, Justin Gaethje returned to the win -column with an incredible victory over Rafael Fiziev.

After the victory of Gaethje, UFC boss, Dana White claimed that he could fight alongside Makhachev, especially with the Makhachev team.
