Deschamps hits back at critics: ‘I have the energy to continue in France post’

Didier Deschamps has sufficient credit in the bank. After winning the FIFA World Cup with Les Bleus in 2018, he went on to lead them to the World Cup final in 2022, ultimately losing on penalties to Argentina in Qatar.

However, despite leading France to the European Championship semi-finals this summer, Deschamps has been criticized for the way they got there. Randal Kolo Muani's goal against Spain in the semi-final defeat was the only goal scored by a French player from open play in the entire competition.

He has been the subject of criticism ever since, while Les Bleus' form since EURO 2024 has done little to dampen that criticism, with some calling for change. While Zinedine Zidane has been continuously linked with the job of manager of Les Bleus, Deschamps has strong backing from FFF chairman Philippe Diallo, with whom a strong relationship has been built.

And while criticism has only increased since the 0-0 draw against Israel earlier this week, Deschamps has stated his determination to continue in this role. “I have my energy and everything to keep the French national team at the level it has reached, with the expectations that are there. Criticism has always been part of my life, compliments too,” he began on Sunday at a press conference prior to Les Bleus' UEFA Nations League match against Italy.

He continued: “That has no bearing on what I have to do, what I think I have to do to ensure that the French national team performs as well as possible.”
