Inter boss Inzaghi in awe at Barca wonderkid Yamal

Simone Zaghi remained awe in the performance of Lamine Yamal after the star of the young person against Inter.

Yamal, who became the second-youngest player who started in a semi-final of the Champions League, marked his 100th Barcelona performance in style on Wednesday.

The 17-year-old gave a great goal to drag Barca back in after Inter had a 2-0 lead in goals of Marcus Thuram and Denzel Dumfries.

Ferran Torres recovered parity before Dumfries scored a second, with Barca again equalizing Yann Sommer's own goal, making the draw subtle on 3-3 on 3-3 for the second stage of next week in San Siro.

But it was Yamal who got the headlines, with his goal something of beauty. He competed against Henrikh Mkhitaryan, hit the penalty area and bowed a nice finish in the left hand.

“I have not seen a player like Yamal for the past eight or nine years,” said Inter Boss Inzaghi.

Yamal, who also hit the bar twice, ended with 102 touches, a remarkable figure for a winger, while creating two chances and also completed six of his 10 dribbling attempts.

He became the youngest score ever in a semi-final of the Champions League and surpassed the record that was previously held by Kylian Mbappe, while the Spain International is only the second teenager who scored in the last 16, quarterfinals and semi-final within a single Champions League campaign after Mbappe in 2016-17.

However, Inzaghi was impressed by how Inter had a grip on Yamal in the second half.

“We had to put three players on him, and of course that opened space in other areas,” he explained.

“After that his level fell a bit and our second half was of very high quality.”

Yamal has included 49 target involvement in his first 100 Barca performances, scored 22 times and added 27 assists.

His participation on Wednesday, however, seemed to be questioning when he wiped out of the warm-up.

“He had a small inconvenience, but we rated it and gave him the green light,” said Barca coach Hansi Flick. “And in large games, as he has proven on different occasions, he always appears.”

Although they only had seven shots and all three of whom they got on goal, Inter was a constant threat during the break, and Mkhitaryan won almost late, with his goal not allowed for a marginal offside.

“The strategy of Barcelona is risky, but it is bearing fruit,” said Inzaghi.

“They have scored more than 150 goals, have won two titles and still compete for two more. But our performance was of a very high standard.”
