Inter hopeful of Martinez return for Barca after edging past Verona

Inter his hopeful Lautaro Martinez can overcome a hamstring injury to play in the semi-final second stage on Tuesday in the semi-final leg against Barcelona.

The striker of Argentina hoped during the break in an exciting 3-3 draw of the first legs last Wednesday against Barcelona.

Martinez then missed the narrow 1-0 victory of Saturday at Hellas Verona, who held Inter three points behind the Serie A-leaders Napoli with three games to play.

“It is true that it is not a lesion, so there is a little hope, but at the moment it is more no than yes,” said assistant Massimiliano Farris, who covers suspended head coach Simone Inzaghi.

“He did not train, we will of course try everything because it is a fundamental match, but unfortunately it is more than yes, unfortunately.”

The ninth minute Penalty from Kristjan Asllani proved the difference, whereby that winner marked his first Serie A-target since March 2024 against Genoa.

No team has indeed scored more goals by penalty than Inter (seven) in the competition of this season, where Roma also scored seven.

Inter has made 10 changes to their starting line-up for the visit of Verona, their most from one match to another in all games since December 2015, a 3-0 Coppa Italia victory against Cagliari.

Defender Yann Bisseck was the only player who kept his place, although Farris refused to label his winning side as options for the second choice.

“Instead of referring to it as a secondary team, I would describe it as a group of players with a limited playing time, but who are fully aware of what is expected of them,” he added.

The visitors offered little threat, in which Amin Sarr gave their only real spark with an oblique strike that forced Josep Martinez in a sharp rescue.

Verona has only built up 0.29 expected goals for a boring show, but Farris says that his party expected the road team to sit back and be satisfied to defend.

“We knew that Verona would be compact, and it was not easy to find holes. Maybe we could have been faster in some decisions in the second half, but we were not confronted many serious dangers,” Farris told Sky Sport Italia.
