In a match between one club that wanted to win the competition and the other that focused on staying in it, Inter needed only six minutes to open the score when Marcus Thuram benefited from Frédéric Guilbert and Davide Frattesi's substandard pass Elegantly put on the side for a simple finish.
The hosts responded well to the setback, where Federico Baschirotto headed off a promising corner of the goal before Stefan de Vrij got a yellow card after being forced to perform a sliding tackle on Nikola Krstović.
The Nerazzurri soon came again, but the hosts quickly had three let-offs in succession. An attempt to free up bouncing through Santiago Pierotti in the path of Thuram, but the attacker placed his shot next to before Carlos Augusto and Frattesi had the ball in the net, after which both hits were marked as offside.
Patrick Dorgu used those narrow escapes almost with a shot that bounced along the pole. Instead, the loose game of the hosts contributed that Inter scored a second in the 39th minute through their captain, when Lautaro Martínez hoped inside and drill a poisonous attack past Wladimiro Falcone.
Lecce came out of the restart challengingly and showed real intentions, although Krstović and þórir Jóhann Helgason both sent an attempt outside the goal and Krstović saw two shots saved by Yann Sommer within 10 minutes of the second half.
However, they got a real blow when Denzel Dumfries got away from Baschirotto and his attempt curled outside of Falcone's range. Only three minutes later, the goalkeeper Frattesi brought down for a penalty kick that Mehdi Taremi turned for his first Serie A goal.
Sommer made a brilliant stop to deny Ylber Ramadani's goal from a distance, so that Inter De Nul kept on the way to the eighth victory from their last nine completed Serie A matches.
Because of this they climb back within three points of leader SSC Napoli, while they also have a match on GLI Azzurri. On the other hand, Lecce suffered successive defeats, which means that it is one place and one point above the relegation zone.
