Inter Milan president Marotta defends CWC exit: Lautaro meant Calhanoglu?

Inter was stunned by Fluminense on Monday with 2-0.

Marotta, however, afterwards: “This is the last game of a very long and tiring season. We represented Italy in all competitions, we played 63 games, much more than some of our direct competitors. This competition is the mirror of what I say: this team would have had a different result in February or March.

“This is not the competition to comment. I wanted to thank Simone Inzaghi and his staff first for the season and Cristian Chivu for the latter very important experience. We had the opportunity to evaluate various young players, the batteries were flat and now we have to charge them, to present ourselves in the best possible way.

“We will be confronted for a long season, that will end with the World Cup: there will be players who have to confirm a high level for the entire season.”

Maybe Lautaro was talking about Calhanoglu

Asked about the harsh words of Captain Lautaro Martinez for his teammates afterwards, Marotta continued: “I interpret the words of the captain in a positive way.

“He referred to an important concept: when a player no longer wants to be in a team, it is correct that he goes. There is no one who has manifested this situation in concrete terms.

“Perhaps he referred to the dynamics of (Hakan) Calhanoglu: the situation will be defined quickly, calmly and clearly. We will talk to each other to solve the problems: Lautaro's recall is shared by the club because this is the mind that can take us far.”

Inter -midfielder Calhanoglu opened the door this summer to a move to Galatasaray and openly discussed in interviews.
