Simone Inzaghi admitted Inter “didn't show the level we are capable of” during Tuesday's defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.
The Nerazzurri suffered their first defeat of the Champions League season as they went down 1-0 at the BayArena after Nordi Mukiele's late winner.
It was the first goal Inzaghi's side had conceded in their first six games, while they failed to score a single shot on target at the other end of the pitch.
And Inter's head coach acknowledged he wanted to see more from his players.
“It wasn't one of our best games, but we faced a top quality team who started better and hit the crossbar early,” he said. “After that we controlled the game, perhaps too much, because we should have had more courage.
“We lacked quality in the last 25 metres, and once we got the match under control, a loss like that is frustrating as it ends our unbeaten run.
“It's a shame we conceded that goal. We had to pay more attention. We played worse in the second half than in the first, but there were no warning signs.
“When we started to build possession it felt like they were struggling with our play. We should have added more quality but today we didn't show the level we are capable of. We definitely needed to do more.”
Nevertheless, Inzaghi also focused on the positives: Inter occupies fourth place in the table, with the top eight advancing straight to the knockout stages.
“Still, it doesn't detract from our journey,” he added. “[On Wednesday]we will probably be among the top eight, and in January our fate is in our hands with two challenging matches.
“There are regrets, but that is Champions League football. We will continue with our heads held high.”
