The Belgian goalkeeper was a surprising omission from Real Madrid's squad ahead of the match against Celta Vigo.
Real Madrid will be without first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for the Copa del Rey match against Celta Vigo (Thursday, January 16, 3:30 PM ET / 12:30 PM PT).
Thibaut Courtois was a surprise omission from the squad when this was announced the day before the match, as the mood in the Valdebebas camp darkened further after a humiliating 2-5 defeat to arch-rivals FC Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.
It's not all bad news though, and Ancelotti will be able to rely on Courtois for the foreseeable future as Madrid continue to fight for LaLiga and the Champions League.
What injury does Thibaut Courtois have?
The good news for Real Madrid fans is that Courtois is not injured and Ancelotti is simply resting the player. This season, Courtois played sixteen LaLiga games, four Champions League games, both the Spanish Super Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
During his pre-match press conference, Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that Andriy Lunin would take his place between the sticks and play against Celta.
Who plays for Real Madrid against Celta?
Everything indicates that Modric and Vini Jr will start the match against Galicia, as they are unavailable for Madrid for Sunday's match against UD Las Palmas due to suspension.
The match between Real Madrid and Celta will be played on Thursday, January 16 at the Santiago Bernabéu with kick-off at 3:30 PM ET / 12:30 PM PT. ESPN Deportes will broadcast the game to fans in the US. Watch Real Madrid vs Celta live on FuboTV, which offers a free trial.
