Is this a goal? Newcastle are awarded controversial equaliser against Birmingham

Newcastle got a controversial goal in their FA Cup fourth round collision with Birmingham.

Ethan Laird shocked the men of Eddie Howe by opening the score within 40 seconds.

The visitors then came in a controversial way in a flat terms when Joe Willock returned the withdrawal of William Osula in the 21st minute.

The Newcastle midfielder initially became depressed after he was refused by goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell before he flared the rebound over the bar.

But depression changed to pleasure when the magpies were handed over the goal when Willock's first shot was supposed to have crossed the line.

Goal line technology is used in the FA Cup but not in the field of League One.

Former Birmingham -defender Matthew Upson said on the BBC: it's a difficult one to call. It is actually impossible to say whether that is completely over the line.

“It is the first real -time that Callum Wilson got into the game and has made something happen.”

Former Everton -midfielder Leon Osman added: 'The assistant referee marked very early as he gave the goal. You put the flag over the chest to say a goal, but he still waved it as if he had given an offside or throw.

“Everyone is just confused. Newcastle thought they missed the chance and Birmingham thought they got away with it. That looks terribly close and it would have been very difficult to give. '
