Isak ‘not thinking’ about future ahead of Carabao Cup final against Liverpool

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak has held conversations about his future while trying to help put an end to the 70-year-old waiting of the club for a domestic trophy in the Carabao Cup final with Liverpool.

The sparkling goalscoring form of the 25 -year -old – so far this season 22 – has repeatedly connected him to a move from St James' Park, with Arsenal under the long list of admirers.

Isak, however, it says that he will not allow speculation to derail the Newcastle bid to go a better one than they did against Manchester United in the same competition program two seasons ago.

“This club can achieve great things,” he said on Friday, before traveling to the capital. “I think we really have to watch one season at the same time and this season we can win a trophy that would be great for everyone.

“About my future, it is nothing I really think about. I often said during a season – just concentrate on the track – and now it is probably the worst time to think about something else, so all our focus is only on Sunday and it does well and hopefully brings the trophy back to Newcastle.”

Asked if he was open to signing a new deal in St James' Park this summer, he added: “I said that I don't really think about the summer, but yes, that will probably be a talk point as soon as the season is ready.

“We will really see it because no conversations have been held yet.”

Van Dijk vs Isak an important struggle?

One of the most important match-ups in Sunday's final is probably the battle of Isak with Reds Captain Virgil van Dijk.

The attacker, whose record is particularly impressive, has three goals and one assist in the five times that he is confronted with a Liverpool side with Van Dijk in the Premier League.

“I would not say that I fear someone, that's a strong word.” Isak said when he was asked about the Dutchman. “I have a lot of respect for Van Dijk and their entire defense.

“I am a player who always concentrates on myself. If I do the right things and play my best game, it will benefit the team.

“I am not against one player. It is Newcastle against Liverpool. It is a team sport. It comes down to what we do as a team and I will clearly try to use my qualities to improve us.”

Isak will be against the Premier League Champions-Elect without suspended side-kick Anthony Gordon, while defenders Lewis Hall and Sven Botman are put aside by an injury.
