‘It’s not a good time to discuss future’ according to Leverkusen coach Alonso

Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso does not want to talk about his future in the club, after he is linked to the job of Real Madrid.

When Carlo Ancelotti leaves the Spanish giants at the end of the season, Alonso is put forward in some circles as his potential successor.

The Spaniard is impressed by Germany, winning a Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal Double in its first full season in the club, which is also unbeaten during the competition season, with their only loss in 2023-24 in the Europa League final.

“It's not a good time to discuss the future. We are at a very important time in the season,” said Alonso.

“I don't want to talk about speculation and rumors. [I understand] That this happens, but what is more important to me is what is happening now. “

Leverkusen are currently six points behind the League leaders Bayern Munich with five more games in the Bundesliga.

Chief Executive Fernando Carro said in the meantime that Alonso was already planning for next season with the German club and was “comfortable”.

Alonso was associated with Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern last season before he decided to stay in March.

He won the LaLiga title and the Champions League for six years as a player at Real Madrid of 2009-2014, while withing when playing in Bayern in 2017.

His first steps in coaching came with the Real Madrid team under 14 before he moved to the B-team of Real Sociedad.

It was Leverkusen who offered him his first full -time management job in October 2022, with the club second soil in the Bundesliga when he took over.
