ANDRE ONANA could have to leave Manchester United if he fails to stop his nightmare.
That is the verdict of former Old Trafford maverick Massimo Taibi, who went down in Red Devils folklore in 1999 for a huge howl against Southampton's Matt Le Tissier.
Cameroonian goalkeeper Onana, 28, has come under heavy criticism following a series of mistakes since his arrival from Inter Milan in July 2023.
The bloopers culminated in a shocker on Boxing Day when he was beaten straight from a Matheus Cunha corner in the defeat at Wolves.
And ex-keeper Taibi, 54, believes Onana might be better off reviving his career at United.
He said: “I would cut straight to the point and say to him: 'André, you are one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, but in the Premier League you are underperforming.'
“Turn criticism aside, do some research, hit reset and go again. And if things don't change in June, move on'.
“I think subconsciously the United environment is not ideal for him and if a marriage shows cracks there is no point in continuing.
“Sometimes things don't work in a team and it's best to have it both ways, which wouldn't be a failure.
“For me he is a strong goalkeeper who is in a situation where he cannot show his skills because he is not suited to the English game.
“He is only suitable for the Prem when it comes to his ball-playing ability and structure.”
Taibi – who let Le Tissier's long shot go through his legs and into the net – believes Onana will excel in Italy or France.
Ahead of tomorrow's visit to Newcastle, he added: “Andre would be better suited to an Italian or French team.
For English football you need a goalkeeper who is more imposing, regularly throws his fists off his line and has a different saving technique.
“In his place I wouldn't have left Inter, where he was a big player. He took a calculated risk thinking he would fit in seamlessly at Manchester United, but it backfired.
“But even though he has not lived up to expectations, he remains a top goalkeeper, one of the best in Europe.”
