Jamie Carragher reveals why he’s disappointed in ‘selfish’ Mohamed Salah after Liverpool star dropped contract bombshell
Jamie Carragher has attacked Mohamed Salah following Liverpool's recent outburst over the standstill in his contract negotiations.
The Egyptian's contract expires at the end of this season and he recently claimed there are no new offers on the table from Merseyside chiefs.
The striker gave a rare interview with Mail Sport and a small group of other reporters after scoring twice in the 3-2 win over Southampton.
Now ex-Reds defender Carragher has spoken out, calling the Egyptian 'selfish' for his comments.
Carragher told Sky Sports: “Of course there have been discussions. At the moment there is clearly a big difference in valuation, how Salah and his agent value themselves, in terms of contract length, and how Liverpool do.
'The reason Liverpool haven't offered a contract yet is because Mo Salah will reject it. They are still talking, I would like them to meet halfway.
'But I have to say that I am very disappointed in Mo Salah. That interview last night. Liverpool have Real Madrid during the week and Manchester City next weekend. That's the story for Liverpool at the moment.
“And Mo Salah, we are aware – especially the local reporters at the club – that he has been put in the mixed zone twice in seven years. That's absolutely fine.
'But he retires for the third time at Southampton because he won Liverpool the game and put it out.
“If he continues to comment or his agent continues to spread cryptic tweets, that is selfish. That is thinking about oneself and not about the football club.'
As reported by Mail Sport, Liverpool have rejected a lucrative £150 million bid from Saudi side Al-Ittihad in 2023. On that occasion, the Reds could not compete with a whopping tax-free salary of £1.25 million per week. offer from the club.
Salah said on Sunday about his contract break: 'We are almost in December and I have not yet received any offers to stay at the club.
'I'm probably outside more than inside. You know I've been at the club for years.
'There is no such club. But ultimately it's out of my hands. Like I said, it's December and I haven't received anything about my future yet.
'I love the fans. The fans love me. Ultimately it is not in my hands, nor in the hands of the fans.'
Furious Liverpool supporters branded the club's owners 'shameful' and 'inexcusable' after Salah's revelation.
Salah has started well this season under new manager Arne Slot, scoring 12 goals in 18 games in all competitions, but has left his future on Merseyside up in the air.
Liverpool came from behind to claim a 3-2 win over Southampton on Sunday and extended their lead at the top of the table to eight points, with Salah the hero on the south coast.
