Jamie Carragher’s son, 22, gets first international call up but will not play for England like Liverpool legend dad

Jamie Carragher's son James was called by the Malta National Football team.

James, 22, has been established this season in League One for Wigan.

The former Liverpool -legend -father of the defender, 47, earned 38 England caps during his play career.

But after he received Maltese citizenship last month, James will represent another country.

The Latics star is eligible for Malta through his father's grandfather.

His father has also received Maltese citizenship.

Carragher has been appointed in the Boss Emilio de Leo team for upcoming World Cup qualifications against Finland and Poland.

Last month, Bjorn Vassallo, president of Malta Football Association, confirmed that conversations had taken place with Carragher.

Vassallo said: “We have been talking to James and his father Jamie in recent months in recent months; he is open to it, but we are still working on it.”

Carragher played 22 times in League One for Wigan this season.

The defender born in Liverpool has the tasks between the right back and center half.

Carragher spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Oldham Athletic.
