Atletico Madrid start 2025 as leaders of La Liga after their sensational late 2-1 win over Barcelona.
Los Rojiblancos ended their 18-year wait for a league win in Catalonia when Alexander Sorloth came off the bench to score a winner in the 96th minute.
The win over their rivals leaves Diego Simeone's team three points clear at the top of the table on a rollercoaster night.
Sorloth's eighth league goal of the season proved the difference as Simeone's plan paid off, with his team keeping enough energy in the tank to strike late.
The Norwegian has had a mixed start in Madrid, but Atletico Madrid captain Jan Oblak believes he can lead the title in 2025.
“I have never won here since I started working at Atletico. We finally did it! A difficult match, but three points. Let us continue in this spirit,” said quotes from Marca.
“We resisted at 1-0 and in the last minute Sorloth gave us the victory again.
“Sorloth had to come in to get the victory here. It's not easy to do that. When he comes in, he always does his job. He is the striker we need, who scores goals.”
Atletico Madrid are having a less demanding January than their rivals as they are not involved in the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, and they return from the winter break with a Copa del Rey match in Marbella on January 4.
