Jeremie Frimpong on replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold: It’s big boots to fill but I’ll fill them

Jeremie Frimpong has supported himself to fill the “Big Boots” of Trent Alexander-Arnold in Liverpool.

The Premier League champions signed Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen after activating the release clause of € 35 million (£ 29.5 million) of € 35 million.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has a high opinion about the right back, which can also play as a winger and the likely replacement for Alexander-Arnold.

After he helped Liverpool for a second Premier League title, Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid this summer.

Frimpong, with Sky Sports, enjoys the challenge to fill the emptiness that has been left by the English International.

He said: “It's big shoes, but it's Liverpool, it's a big team that wins trophies for a reason. If you play for Liverpool, you have to fill in the shoes and perform. I have always believed in myself. I am a winner. That is what I will bring.”

He added: “The Premier League is the best competition in the world. I grew up in Manchester, so I always wanted to come back. It was always the plan.

“I know how to be a champion at Bayer Leverkusen, so a champion team is a privilege, especially for Liverpool. Going to watch them is crazy. The manager told me how I can help the team and he really likes me as a player. It has extra motivation and faith.”

'Wirtz is a very, very special player'

The owners of Liverpool have tried to maintain the Feel-good factor this summer by spending serious money in the transfer market.

Almost £ 150 million has been spent on securing the Bayer Leverkusen duo Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, who was broken up for a club record £ 116 million.

With his friend who joins him as a new Liverpool player, Frimpong is enthusiastic that fans see what a special talent Wirtz is.

He said: “He is my boy. He is a winner – a very, very special player and very hardworking. The competition will love him. I don't have to talk much, watch him. He doesn't crumble, he likes busy. He is a man who makes you enjoy football with the way he plays.”

Analysis: How Frimpong Alexander-Arnold can replace in Liverpool

Sky Sports' Peter Smith:

“Trent Alexander -Arnold and Jeremie Frimpong are among the top players in their positions in world football – but they are very different players with very different styles. The Dutchman could transform their attacking game plan.

“While Alexander-Arnold is known for his range, so that his teammates are put in dangerous positions with his balls in the box of Crossfield deliveries, Frimpong is running out of his team with his running and wearing the ball.

“The statistics illustrate the point, with the comparison between the through balls and take-ons that the two players have made remarkable in the past two seasons. Alexander-Arnold has made 16 balls in this period, but only two.

“That difference can also be seen in the heat in the pair of the couple. While Alexander -Arnold often does a lot of his work in deeper areas – and that is a characteristic of Arne Slot's tactics this term, with its full -backs that sometimes stay back – Frimpong seems to receive the ball or in advanced areas.

“Of course Frimpong played as a right wing for Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen and was able to weigh from that higher position with a considerable number of goals and assists.

“How would he be needed to adjust his role in Liverpool is an interesting question. Mohamed Salah has spoken about how lock has illuminated him from many defensive tasks. So if Frimpong would encounter those right -wing areas, Salah could drive into a more central role?

“With Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool has to adjust. And Frimpong offers them the opportunity to play in a different way while they want to defend their Premier League crown next season.”
