Chelsea is back in the Champions League and former midfielder Joe Cole thinks that a proven goal scorer is a must if the team of Enzo Maresca will close the gap on the top three next season
Joe Cole says that a summer of calmness is needed at Chelsea, regardless of the outcome in the final of Wednesday evening's conference against Real Betis and next month's club.
And although he does not agree with all the elements of their manual, Cole believes that two more years are needed before the daring strategy of the owners can be defined as a success or bust.
The former midfielder believes that silverware can act as a springboard under the steward of Todd Boehly and Bedhad Eghali, but emphasizes that another chaos window can have an adverse effect on the young charges of Enzo Maresca.
“The club has had so much going on, it needs continuity,” said Cole. “It has been a good season because progress has been made. The club must continue to believe in the approach.
“I would do things differently, I would have had much more experience in the team and stay with managers. But it is three years in a five -year project. In two years when Chelsea is at the top of English football and competes with the Champions League then it is a well -performed task.”
Although Cole thinks that this summer's transfer priority should add a proven goal scorer to lead the attack.
He thinks that Chelsea is a better team when Hit-and-Miss Center-Forward Nicolas Jackson, who missed the last two league matches of the season because of the suspension, is involved.
But a more productive NO9 is required to close the opening at the top. Ipswich's Liam Delap and Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike are viewed.
For TNT Sports Pundit Cole, Nigeria's Victor Osimhen and Aston Villas Ollie Watkins, however, would be the ideal fit, even though it is older than the profile of player Chelsea is enthusiastic.
“They will stay with the model, but they must find more goals in the last third,” he added. “If Osimhen is available, go get him. Ollie Watkins in that Chelsea team immediately improves them.
“I come from a purely football perspective, but these guys try to run a successful company where you need assets.”
