Joe Rogan recalls moment Jon Jones realized he had ‘horrible’ injury during post-fight UFC interview

Joe Rogan recalls one of his most eventful UFC interviews.

For decades, the legendary MMA commentator has climbed into the Octagon after fights to interview the UFC winners and losers.

Many of them were eventful, as UFC athletes are known for using their post-fight mic time to call out rivals, make crazy statements and cause a scene.

However, none of them were as strange as what happened after Jon Jones defeated Chael Sonnen in the first round of their light heavyweight title fight at UFC 159 in April 2013.

Joe Rogan remembers the wild interview with Jon Jones

Jon Jones put in a sensational performance to TKO 'The American Gangster' with just 27 seconds left in the very first round at UFC 159.

Everything seemed to be going perfectly until his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, where he went from celebrating a big win to looking like he was passing out.

During their conversation, Jones noticed that his toe was so broken that if Sonnen had survived the round, he would have won the belt by doctor's stoppage.

More than a decade later, Rogan brought up his infamous interview with “Bones,” which continued after the greatest of all time took a seat to allow the UFC doctor to assess the damage.

“Jon Jones can't even fight unless his big toe on his left foot is taped to his next toe,” Rogan said on a recent episode of his popular podcast.

“He has to have it taped up because he tore his toe completely upside down when he beat up Chael Sonnen. And he didn't realize it until I interviewed him after the fight.

“Then he looks down and sees his toe and he [gasps]. He panicked and had to sit down. I didn't even feel it. His toe was upside down. For example, the bottom of his toe was pointed upwards. It was terrible.”

Rogan added, “I think he noticed [before me]. He destroyed his toe.

“That's because of the power of beating Chael Sonnen. That's where that came from, ground and pound, when he had him on the ground and just bumped into him.

“Someone isolates the moment their toe curls, you can see that in the replay. The amount of torque he used to kill Chael Sonnen.”

Joe Rogan is spreading rumors about Jon Jones' salary demands

Jones continued to dominate his rivals despite his mangled toe.

The 37-year-old fighting legend became UFC heavyweight champion by submitting Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 in March 2023.

In November 2024, he defended his title for the first time by knocking out former two-time titleholder Stipe Miocic at UFC 309.

Talks have since turned to a unification fight with interim champion Tom Aspinall, with UFC boss Dana White 100 percent guaranteeing they will fight in 2025.

Negotiations are currently ongoing and Rogan recently shared a rumor about the amount of money Jones is willing to take against the streaking English knockout artist.

“The rumor is he wants $30 million,” he said. “I hope they pay it.”

It's a huge, but not surprising number. Jones has been honest about his distaste for fighting Aspinall and has insisted he will only do so if he gets 'F*** you money'.

$30 million can certainly be described that way, but only time will tell if White gives in to the pound-for-pound superstar's demands to put on the biggest fight 2025 has to offer.
