Jon Jones Claims He Can Give Up the Heavyweight Title After UFC 309 and 'Fight for Fun'
Speaking to veteran MMA reporter Aaron Bronsteter, Jon Jones suggested he would be willing to give up his heavyweight title to complete his UFC career with a series of “fun” fights he had always dreamed of.
“I only saw myself having super fights after this… If we get a dominant performance after this fight, I am willing to leave the heavyweight championship and fight for fun.
“Man, I want to fight for fun. “I've had a big chip on my shoulder my whole career, having to defend, defend, defend… I don't necessarily want it to be over, but I just want to fight for fun.”
Jones claimed he wanted to take 'random' fights, rather than fights with title implications, after watching teammate Donald Cerrone's career unfold – the 'Cowboy' himself recently announced his return to MMA.
“I would love to experience that for the first time in my career; I don't have this belt to try to protect, but fight guys who stylistically just want to fight,” Jones said, before throwing out two surprising names that could fit this criteria.
“Just random fights like Jamahal Hill; me and him meeting at 220lbs and seeing what happens – that would be interesting to see… I'm at an interesting weight where I can fight both light heavyweights and heavyweights.
“Derrick Lewis with his knockout power, the greatest puncher in history. I'm just throwing out random names, but I'm at a body weight now where I can only do fun fights, and that's what I want to do.”
Jones has also teased a potential superfight with light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira.
Tom Aspinall fires back at Jon Jones over 'legacy' comments and 'duck' accusations
Nearly the entire MMA community would rather see Jones fight interim heavyweight king Tom Aspinall than 42-year-old Stipe Miocic, though Aspinall isn't necessarily surprised by how the title picture plays out.
“People are starting to act surprised, 'oh Jon is a duck, Jon is a duck' – Jon has avoided Francis Ngannou for three years,” a frustrated Aspinall said via his YouTube channel.
“For example, don't be surprised: this man always goes into battle where he has the advantage.”
Aspinall is in New York as a backup fighter for the main event of UFC 309, and while walking through the Big Apple, he sent one last message to 'Bones': 'Jon, if you don't plan on gambling with your legacy , then that sounds to me like you're afraid of losing to me.
UFC 309 takes place on Saturday, November 16 live from Madison Square Garden.
