Lille -striker Jonathan David leaves the French club on a free transfer when his contract ends next month, giving Manchester United the chance to sign him cheaply
Manchester United has the chance to sign Jonathan David on a free transfer this summer after he confirmed that he is leaving Lille. David, 25, will not sign a new contract with the French club and continue to Weiden new when his current deal ends on 30 June.
The Canadian striker has been connected to United for many years alongside a large number of European giants, because he had been impressed for Lille since his move from Ghent in 2020. David has lifted the Ligue 1 title in his first season and scored 109 goals in 231 games for Les Dogues, making him third in the all time of the club of all time.
That kind of output would be ideal for United, who prioritized to sign a striker in the summer transfer window. The Red Devils want an upgrade to Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, who have scored a combined 17 goals this season compared to Davids 25.
The 25-year-old also skipped 12 assists, while Lille goes to fourth place on Saturday on the last day, which would give them a place in the Europa League. But if they are eligible, David will not be part of it.
“I wanted to tell you that after so many years in the club it is time for me,” he said in a video posted on Instagram. “I spent five beautiful seasons here, I know it has not always been easy, but I hope that with my goals and parties in it I have succeeded in bringing you some joy, especially with the French championship title and the Champions Trophy.”
David thanked his teammates and added: “I know I didn't have the easiest start, but you have always been behind me, you have supported me through the difficult times, and I will keep you in my heart.”
The Canada International is recently connected to Napoli and Barcelona and Newcastle. David is also not the only striker on the Radar of United, with Liam Delap as their number 1 target and available for £ 30 million after the relegation of Ipswich.

But the fact that United does not have to pay compensation for David could influence them. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made it clear that the Red Devils are in a precarious financial position that makes winning the Europa League final against Tottenham even more important this Wednesday, because it would guarantee them a place in the Champions League of next season, which is worth 100 million.
