Jordan Henderson has terminated his Ajax contract, has confirmed the club.
The Dutch giants released a statement on Thursday morning that confirm that the English midfielder was released from his contract a year earlier.
It said: “Jordan Henderson leaves Ajax. The club has worked with the player's request to end the current employment contract.
“The Englishman's contract with Ajax ran until June 30, 2026, but now ends immediately.”
The 35-year-old is connected to a stunning transfer back to the Premier League, with former Club Sunderland as a potential destination.
Local media, however, have denied the interest of the black cats in the English star.
The ex-Livepool captain also wrote a farewell message to the club and its fans and said it was a privilege to wear the club colors and to thank them for the welcome for him and his family.
He said: “I would like to express my enormous thanks to anyone associated with Ajax because he has given me the opportunity to represent this incredible attitude in recent years.
“Playing for this club was an honor in itself. The privilege of being a captain was even more. My only regret is that we have no longer delivered success for the great supporters.
“They deserve to celebrate big titles again, and I am sure that time will come soon. My family and I felt so welcome, not only by the club, but also in the beautiful city of Amsterdam.
“We will always be grateful for that. Because of the tragic events of last week, and the devastating loss of my former teammate Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, it does not feel good at the moment to say or do more than to share this short explanation.
“However, I am completely aware that I owe this club, my teammates and the supporters a fuller and more person thanks.
“For now I want to express my appreciation to Ajax, as well as everyone I didn't have personally yesterday, everyone who makes this club so special.”
Henderson joined Ajax in January 2024 for a deal of two and a half years after he ended his contract with Saudi-Arabian outfit al-tettifaq among themselves, with whom he reunited himself at Steven Gerrard.
In general, he made 57 performances for the Eredivisie -Outfit and scored one goal.
Alex Kroes, technical director of Ajax, also praised the midfielder and called him a “real captain”.
He said: “Jordan was a real captain for us, both on and outside the field.
“An international top player who, due to his mentality and leadership qualities, made an important contribution to our qualification for the UEFA Champions League and the further development of Ajax's elite sports culture.
“Jordan meant Ajax a lot, and we are grateful to him for that. We wish him the very best while he continues his impressive career.”
Last month it was claimed that Nottingham Forest and Marseille focused on a move for Henderson.
His decision to stop Ajax comes from the World Cup 2026 for a year.
Henderson is back in the frame of England after the appointment of Thomas Tuchel.
Because he was a surprise recording in the German first team, he was also admitted for the most recent international matches against Andorra and Senegal.
