Jose Mourinho has described Fenerbahce's shock 3-1 Europa League loss for Rangers as “a good result”, but insisted that their last 16 meeting is not over.
Vaclav Cerny's Double After the opener of Cyriel Dessers Rangers gave another famous European victory when Fenerbahce's 18-Match undefeated run came an abrupt end.
Rangers and interim boss Barry Ferguson have an advantage of two goals to bring back to Ibrox for the second stage of next week.
Mourinho complained an abject display from his team, but still believes that his side has everything to play in Glasgow.
“We were very bad everywhere. I think it is not fair to say that we were very bad at defense, because we were very bad everywhere,” said Mourinho.
“Maybe you laugh, but for me it was a good result, because the way we carried out the result could be greater than this.
“I know that Jack Butland has made three fantastic rescues. I know, I think, there is a penalty, but to speak about the referee after this performance, I don't think it's ethical.
“The chances we had to score, we didn't. The dynamics in midfield was not good. We made incredible mistakes defensively. We never checked that.
“They defended a lot with the block very low, a good and dangerous counterattack. So we deserve the punishment of this result.
“But if someone wants to ask me later, I think it's over, no, I don't think it's over. There is 90 or 120 minutes to play.
“It's the only positive thing. And I don't take positive points from this game. Everything went wrong.
“The only thing I tell them is: don't celebrate too much. Because there is a second game. It's my only advice.”
Ferguson refuses to be carried away
“There is no way that the draw is over. It was a great result for us tonight, but it is only the peace.
“I have enormous respect for Jose as a manager, as I said before, he is one of the best that ever has been and when you look at his team, he has players who are really dangerous and can really influence games, so there is no way we think we are in the last eight.
“I would be an absolute idiot if I thought so, because I, like I said, have respect.
“I thought it was a really good performance from my team. They gave me everything I asked for from the start of the week.
“We went a different way than what we are used to playing. They took a lot of information. One thing I have to give is is credit because they took everything that I and my coaching staff went on the training field.
“I thought tonight saw a real threat tonight. I thought defensive, the boys put their bodies at stake. In general it was a brilliant result.
“I told the players. We will rest for a few days because they have worked so hard tonight. Then we will go back to work because it will be a big game for us next Thursday.”
