Atletico Madrid felt very awarded last season with their Champions League exit, and that feeling was raised earlier this week when it was confirmed that the rule about “Double Touch” punishments would be changed in the future. In fact, it means that the efforts of Julian Alvarez during the shoot-out defeat against Real Madrid, who was at the time controversial, should now be.
Alvarez and Atleti were surprised by the decision not to allow his penalty, and that feeling has remained until his time. The Argentinian striker has maintained his position that a second touch cannot be observed, as he made clear during a recent interview with Dazn (via Cadena Ser).
“It was a bit unfair and there was a lot of anger because we didn't know if it was two details or not to this day. That's it … The video came out, I saw it ten million times, especially those days, because it was very difficult to observe, it's impossible to notice.
“We had done a great match, we were so close to walking through … That everything falls down because something like that hurts a lot.”
The decision hurt atleti so much more because it was against Real Madrid, their bitter rivals. At the time of Alvarez's punishment, they were in a good position in the shoot-out, but it didn't matter much because they would be defeated, which extended their bad record against Los Blancos in the Champions League.
Although it is positive that clarification has arrived on this, it now does little to help Athleti. They still feel a sense of injustice about the way they were eliminated from last season's Champions League by Real Madrid.
