Southampton boss Ivan Juric was annoyed by the way his side failed to take the game forward from a goal down in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United.
The Saints took a lead in the first half through a Manuel Ugarte own goal and held on until the final ten minutes before an Amad Diallo hat-trick condemned them to defeat.
They sit bottom of the Premier League with six points from 21 games, ten points short of safety.
Juric said: “As a team we played a very good match for 70 to 75 minutes. Everything was almost perfect, but we needed to score more goals.
“But there's a point when you have to be a little bit more vicious, manage the game differently, and we didn't do that.
“We were very bad at managing the game. You can't play 95 minutes at the same level. There is a point when you have to approach things differently.
“I have to be honest: I expected a little more from everyone [the substitutes] when they came in. They should give us more energy and more intensity.
“You have to win the throw-ins, win the mistakes. We lost some balls in the middle and I didn't like that. It's a real shame, it's a shame that we play like that and lose.”

Juric refuses to give up on the mastermind behind one of the greatest escapes in Premier League history and insists his side are playing well enough to pick up more points.
They had five shots on target in the first half of the match, the most they have ever had in an opening period of a Premier League match this season, but are now winless in 18 away games at this level.
The Saints manager said: “It must be positive for us that they can play like this against Manchester United.
“If they are competitive here, they can be in every game. I think the boys understand that we have to work even harder to get fitter and we will see that in the next game.”
