Justin Gaethje threw away UFC title after battering lightweight bogeyman in career-defining fight

On this day in 2020, Justin Gaethje perhaps produced his most impressive representation in the Octagon so far.

'The highlight' was immediately one of the most exciting hunters on the Roster from the moment he first stepped the Octagon.

After several losses, he re-introduced himself with three consecutive knockout profits of the first round to prove that he was much more than just an entertaining fight.

After Gaethje Donald Cerrone stopped in September 2019, his next fight for the Interim title would be, although that version of the gold clearly did not matter to him at the time.

He still has to hold the undisputed lightweight title, but that is certainly a huge source of motivation because Gaethje retiring is approaching.

Justin Gaethje pulverized Tony Ferguson before giving the interim title on UFC 249

On UFC 249 Justin Gaethje proved once and for all that he was one of the best light weights in the world when he met Tony Ferguson.

9 May saw the promotion returning of a long break caused by the pandemic for an event behind closed doors where it felt like the world was looking.

The original main event would finally have seen Khabib Nurmagomedov Ferguson met in a lightweight title Unification Bout, but it was finally canceled for the fifth time.

Instead, Gaethje stepped in to challenge 'El Cucuy' for the interim title, while trying to break the 12-Fight win-streak that Ferguson had changed in the bogeyman of the lightweight division.

Fighters who entered the Octagon with the interim champion often seemed like they had left a quick collision by the time they had left, but in the Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena it was the other way around.

Apart from a huge uppercut that somehow survived Gaethje, the fight was one -way traffic when 'the highlight' hit his opponent with the sink, until the point where it became a difficult watch on points.

Ferguson would not disappear in a superhuman representation of toughness, but in the end he was too sustainable for his own good and the referee eventually waved the fight in the fifth.

Dana White wrapped the interim title around Gaethje's waist, but he quickly ignored it by throwing it on the floor.

He simply told Joe Rogan in his interview after the fight that he would rather “wait for the real one”.

Gaethje would be confronted with Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 254, where 'De Adelaar' would retire after submitting his challenger in the second round.

Tony Ferguson was never the same after hit he took UFC 249

For his loss against Justin Gaethje, Tony Ferguson was an absolute monster on 155 pounds with a diverse arsenal of attacks, a seemingly endless gas tank and insane sustainability.

This fight eventually changed his career completely after he had suffered his most devastating loss that one of the greatest profits of the UFC broke.

His form then changed into a historic losing streak when he became the first hunter who lost 8 UFC periods in a row before he said goodbye to the promotion earlier this year.

Fans expected a war at UFC 249, but what they received instead was a change in the guard with violence.
