Kai Havertz skied a close-range effort in Arsenal's FA Cup third round tie against Manchester United on Sunday.
After a lukewarm first half, the match came alive after the break, with Bruno Fernandes putting his side ahead at the Emirates.
Shortly afterwards, United were reduced to ten men when Diogo Dalot was shown a second yellow card for a mistimed challenge on Mikel Merino.
Mikel Arteta's side quickly capitalized on their lead and Gabriel brought the Gunners back level with a deflected volley.
Havertz was at the heart of the action when referee Andrew Madley pointed to the spot after ruling that Harry Maguire had brought down Havertz in the penalty area.
The decision proved highly controversial among the United players, and a fight subsequently broke out between the two teams in which Havertz was knocked over.
Martin Odegaard stepped up to take the penalty but was denied by a fine save from Altay Bayindir as the match remained level.
Arsenal continued to push for the equalizer. and seemed to have a golden opportunity to take the lead when the ball fell for Havertz in the six-yard box with just minutes to go.
The former Chelsea striker deftly brought the ball down, but improbably fired his subsequent goal over the crossbar, ultimately sending the match into extra time.
The Havertz evening would eventually go from bad to worse as the match remained drawn and was decided by a penalty shootout.
The 25-year-old was the only player to miss his penalty as United progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
