Kane eyes record with Bayern on brink of Bundesliga title

Bayern Munich can secure the Bundesliga title on Saturday with a victory over Mainz, if reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen fail to beat Augsburg.

Bayern saw Leverkusen a competition last season and DFB-Pokal Double Clinchen after being unbeaten in his own country, and would like to seal their 34th German competition crown.

After having won 11 consecutive titles before the triumph of Leverkusen, Bayern will hope that this will recover their domestic dominance, while also helping to post the Bitter Champions League quart final exit from last week to go behind them.

However, this season they only suffered two defeats in the Bundesliga, with one of those in Mainz (2-1) in December.

For the 31-year-old attacker Harry Kane, who scored 60 goals in his first 60 Bundesliga matches for Bayern, it would be the first major club trophy of his career after he had not lifted silverware with Tottenham or England.

With 24 league goals so far this period, Kane is also on the way to becoming the first player who ends as the top scorer of the competition in each of his first two seasons. He has scored six more goals than Patrik Schick (18).

Bayern is 72 points with four more games to play, and with Leverkusen second out of 64.

For 35-year-old Bayern veteran Thomas Muller, who leaves the club at the end of the season after 25 years, it could be his 500th league match for Bayern.

Only three other players in the history of Bundesliga have once reached Mark that Mark is playing for only one club: Charly Korbel (602 games for Eintracht Frankfurt), Manfred Kaltz (581 games for Hamburg) and Michael Lameck (518 for Bochum).

Although Bayern's title profit looks anything but certainly looks, and Leverkusen will be sure of Champions League football next season, there is 12 points for Eintracht, there is a fight for the last two Champions League spots.

Eintracht, third at 52 points, host fourth placed RB Leipzig, on 49, on Saturday. Freiburg, at 48, are fifth.

Mainz, sixth on 47 points, and seventh placed Borussia Dortmund on 45, are also still with a chance, albeit slim, from ending in the top four.

Dortmund, who travels to Hoffenheim on Saturday, has had a disappointing domestic campaign that falls outside the European places.

Not qualifying for the Champions League, a competition in which they reached the final last year, would be a big blow to the club.

But club bosses know that the horror scenario would completely miss European football next season.
