Harry Kane said he was “surprised” when he heard that Thomas Tuchel had been appointed as a replacement for Gareth Southgate as the permanent boss of England.
Tuchel took over on January 1 and signed a 18 -month contract with England to lead them through the World Cup 2026 in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with this his first job at international level.
The German, who is the third foreign manager of England, had been out of football since he left Bayern Munich at the end of the 2023-24 season when he worked with Kane.
And, asked if he had expected to be reunited with his former manager, acknowledged the captain of England that he hadn't done that, but enjoy the chance to work with him again.
“I was surprised if I am honest,” said Kane. “Yes, I didn't expect it. I think I just didn't really think about him like a national team coach.
“But yes, once it was announced, I was really enthusiastic because of course I had the pleasure of working with him last year and I know what he can bring. I knew what he could bring to this kind of squadron that we have.
“And clearly we have only been together for a few days, but it has not disappointed. He brings us to what I thought he would do.
“And I think Kamp after the camp, while he is setting up, while we get to know him more, I think we will improve when we go. But in the end it's about building until next year and these are important camps to do that.”
Kane scored 44 goals under Tuchel last season in all competitions, with 36 of those in the Bundesliga.
He only finished five drift from Robert Lewandowski's Single-season Target record of 41, based in 2019-2020, after he had missed the last game of the season due to injury.
Kane also registered 56 goals involvement for Bayern in his debut season, at least 21 more than Florian Wirtz, who knew 37 for Bayer Leverkusen in all competitions.
“Tuchel did [get the best out of me] Last season there are no real rules for how I play – he sees me as the number nine, the man who is in the box and scores him the goals, “Kane added.
“But there were times in the structure where I was the man who connected the piece, perhaps to get us out of a high -pressure situation.
“When I got on the ball, he spoke a lot about having runners for me, the wing players and a no. 10 if I fell.
“This week he wants a lot of the ball in half of the opposition, a lot of back pressure, and I am the one in the box and scored the opportunities.
“He has already spoken a lot about getting balls in the box as quickly as possible. Last season I had a very good season with him. This team is of course very different, but I am excited to start this England chapter with him.”
