Kieran Tierney: Celtic defender returns from Arsenal with ‘nothing to prove’

Kieran Tierney insists that he returned from Arsenal to Celtic with “nothing to prove” after taking the “easiest” decision of his career.

The defender, who left for Arsenal in 2019, voted a pre-contract with the Scottish champions in February and returned to his boys' club last month.

Tierney made 170 performances for the hoops before he sustained 144 times for the Gunners, even though they suffer a number of long -term injury from both clubs.

His Euro 2024 campaign with Scotland was also demolished by a hamstring problem, but he insists that no one should doubt his fitness.

“Nothing [to prove] Because I know how much I work professionally on my body, with my recovery, as ready as I can be for games, “he said.

“I am not here to prove anything, I am just here to do the best for Celtic and see where it is going.

“I will probably take on an experienced players' role now. When I left I was 21, 22 and now I arrived 28 years old with much more experience than I had.

“There are the younger boys in the team that I can help along the way if I can.”

Tierney, who was a Ballboy when Celtic Barcelona defeated in the Champions League in 2012, will return his Parkhead on Saturday in a friendly against Newcastle.

“It will be great, it will be a special day, probably also a bit nervous because it is the first time I have done it so long,” he added.

“I spent a large part of my life here, a large part of my career and so I will absolutely buzz at it.”

In his first Celtic Stint, Tierney won four Premiership titles, two competition cups and two Scottish cups and was part of the team who claimed a historic Treble -Trebleble during the first spell of Brendan Rodgers as Celtic Manager.

Reunification with the former manager of Liverpool was a factor in his decision to return.

“He played a major role, but in the end both as Celtic, so I was always happy with that, but to be with the Gaffer again and like people [assistant coach] John Kennedy that I have always kept in contact, “Tierney added.

“I loved playing under the Gaffer, played so many games among him, was so successful, so happy and a great manager, pleased to be back with him.

“It is probably the easiest signing that Celtic's had to take and the easiest decision I had to make.

“My personal and collective goals are exactly the same. It is to keep Celtic as successful as possible and to maintain our place at the top, and that is the goal.”

Who has signed more this summer?

While Tierney was the first confirmed summer transfer of Celtic, goalkeeper Ross Doohan is also back to De Hoops for a three -year -old deal after leaving Aberdeen.

Celtic has also signed Benjamin Nygren from FC Nordsjaelland in a deal with a value of approximately £ 2 million, with the wing player signing a five -year deal.

Defender Hayato Inamura has joined Albirex Niigata for a four -year -old deal with the club that also protects the signing of Teenage Forward Callum Osmand on a free from Fulham.
