Kompany: Bayern motivated to bounce back in Klassiker

Vincent Kompany says that Bayern Munich does not have too little motivation in this weekend's class, because they are desperate to bounce back from their Champions League loss.

Bayern host Borussia Dortmund on Saturday with De Hoop on the Bundesliga title, with six more games left.

The side of Kompany suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Inter in the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday, their first loss in the home in the competition since April 2021 against Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Kompany has encouraged his team to show an immediate response to their fourth European loss of the season, to give himself a shot of confidence before next week's return bone in San Siro.

“It [defeat to Inter] Does not feel like a defeat because our will and faith are so great for the return bone, “Kompany told a press conference.

“But on Saturday we want to show a reaction. There is Klassiker and the history between the two clubs.

“So we are not lacking in motivation or energy in the game. I also like that these matches against Dortmund have this extra herb.”

Bayern is currently at the top of the Bundesliga on 68 points, six points free from reigning champion Bayer Leverkusen in second place, and each slip-up may be expensive.

Dortmund, who lost 4-0 on Wednesday to Barcelona in their own quarter-final first stage, is in eighth place in 41 points and the risk of missing Champions League football next season.

Bayern has suffered more defeats for Dortmund than any other side (33, most recently 2-0 at home in March 2024), and they are currently for the first time since 2017 for the first time since 2017 in successive matches against Dortmund.

“We are in a phase of the season where everything is important. Every minute, every moment,” said Kompany. “So everything is a priority.”

The Belgian, in his first season, misses half a dozen important players due to injury, including playmaker Jamal Musiala and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

He said that the absence would not affect the desire of his players to bounce back.

“We always want to win, but it is still too early to define it as a really negative result [against Inter]”Said Kompany.

“Ultimately it is about winners and losers, but our faith is in our team despite the absence, and that spills to the Dortmund game.”
