Vincent Kompany called for a focus from Bayern Munich, despite their healthy advantage on the way to the second stage of their Champions League Last-16 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.
Bayern has one foot in the quarterfinals, after their 3-0 win over their countrymen in the Allianz Arena last week, in which Harry Kane (twice) and Jamal Musiala were on goal wounds.
The side of Kompany was returned to the earth in the Bundesliga on Saturday, when they ran a shock 3-2 defeat of 2-0 against relegation-threatened Bochum.
Nevertheless, they switch their attention back to securing a 35th quarter -final appearance in the Champions League/European Cup.
Despite their strong position, Kompany insisted that his side would play to win the second stage and not be distracted by last week's exploits.
“You can't go into the game that way. When you start a game, the most important priority is always to win,” Kompany said reporters during his press conference before the game.
“We still have to deliver our best performance to win it. It will be a very important game tomorrow. It is not only about the first goal of Leverkusen, but also about Bayern's first goal.
“Ultimately, it will be the quality of players who will decide the game. But if you only think of what the other team needs, then that could happen.
“You can never know the future. We have to prepare for what we can and believe in what we can do.”
