Kompany ready for ‘special night’ as Bayern Munich face San Siro second leg

Bayern Munich is ready for what a special night could be, because they try to overcome a 2-1 first leg shortage in the quarterfinals of the Champions League to Inter Milan on Wednesday, according to head coach Vincent Kompany.

According to Kompany, the game probably comes down to individual moments of glare and that there is a level of faith of his players that they will come to the top.

“Sometimes there are special nights, nights were decided for a moment the game,” Kompany told a press conference. “In the last game we had our chances. Hopefully we will have our chances again tomorrow, maybe not that much.

“There is an expectation for this match, it feels good. It is the best team in Italy against the best team in Germany at the moment. The stadium is also one of the best there is. It is not much better.

“The quality and the talent are there too. The most important thing is that we deliver our best performance.”

“The conviction is, at the end of the day we only have to win one game. We always play to win. Hopefully we can experience a very special evening, also for our fans.

“Everything plays a role: the quality of the opponents, our qualities. It's not just about the opening minutes. It can continue for 90 or 120 minutes. They are two teams with a lot of experience in Europe. Every player knows what it is about.”

With the game that took place in the San Siro, Kompany also recognized the role that the setting had to play in creating the special game.

“It is not a normal stadium, it is one of the best in Europe. It will be a special atmosphere. We believe in our players to deliver special versions at these times. You can make special memories in games such as these,” he said, as quoted on Bayern Munich's official X channel.

If Bayern Munich cancel out the shortage on the first leg, they will have to do this without many senior players. Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, Dayot Upamecano, Hiroki Ito and and Manuel Neuer are among those not available.

“We miss important players and despite these setbacks we are 100% convinced that we can do it with (keeper) Jonas Urbig and the other players,” said Kompany. “They have shown that they can keep track of it and in my opinion the performance that can deliver us results.

“At the end of the day we have to win. You always have to win the game. Whatever the result of the first leg is. Hopefully we can experience a special evening tomorrow.”
