Vincent Kompany regretted Bayern Munich's injury problems after bent from the Champions League in the quarterfinals.
Bayern earned a 2-2 draw at Inter in the second stage on Wednesday, but after they lost the first stage with 2-1, they were beaten out of the competition after a 4-3 aggregated defeat.
Harry Kane had put Bayern level in the draw with the opener in San Siro, but goals from Lautaro Martinez and Benjamin Pavard turned the draw. Eric Dier pulled the visitor level back into the night, while Thomas Muller was also denied a late aggregated level by Yann Sommer.
The side of Kompany was without a linking of important players for both legs, with the Belgian acknowledged that it played a major role in the draw.
“I think the big problem, before Inter, was injuries,” Kompany told reporters.
'We had to understand what we could do without [Hiroki] Ito, [Dayot] Upamecano, [Jamal] Musiala, [Manuel] Neuer, [Alphonso] Davies, [Kingsley] Coman, [Aleksandar] Pavlovic. “
Despite those problems, the side of Kompany gave a good report of himself in both games and let Inter suffer.
They had 20 shots in Wednesday's game, created 1,4 expected goals (XG) and had six shots on goal, the same as Simone Inzaghi's side.
Bayern, however, is now eliminated from the Champions League in the last eight in four of the last five seasons (2023-24 the exception), after he progressed from eight of their nine quarter-final tires earlier.
And it means that they will not be part of the final in their own Allianz Arena.
“I think we have shown a good Bayern Munich in the first game. I am not talking about the result. In the second game we also showed a positive attitude in Milan,” said Kompany.
“We had many scoring opportunities, more than inter. I have mixed feelings. The harsh reality is that we will not play the Champions League final at home.
“We can't change that. The other aspect is the performance. We know we have done enough to win these games.”
Kompany was asked if the hectic schedule was a factor in the injury crisis: “Unfortunately I don't decide.
“In addition to the many games, there are long journeys and the pressure increases when we are absent.”
